Pavel Bure to have jersey retired by Vancouver Canucks

It’s official – the Russian Rocket’s jersey is heading to the rafters.

The Vancouver Canucks announced that Pavel Bure, who played for the team from 1991 to 1998, will have his number 10 jersey retired by the team during the 2013-2014 National Hockey League season. No date for the jersey raising has been announced.

The team made the announcement at its “Summer Summit” today, where they took questions from season ticket holders’ questions about the upcoming  season. At the end of meeting, Bure was brought out by General Manager Mike Gillis, and the announcement was made.

“I haven’t really thought about all that, it’s been a good year,” said Bure in a press release issued by the team.

“It has been a really good time and it’s all just happened pretty much in the last 12 months. My point of view has always been you just do best what you can and whatever happens happens. A lot has happened in last 12 months, but it’s not up to me, I’m just glad it happens.”

Bure, who scored 437 goals in 702 NHL games, was named to the Hall of Fame last year. He is best known for his time in Vancouver, where he scored 60 goals in two consecutive seasons. But his tenure with the Canucks came to a stormy end when he demanded a trade before the 1998-1999 season.

The team had reached out to Bure in recent years, and Bure himself made an emotional  appearance at a Canucks this year which prompted a standing ovation from the Rogers Arena crowd.

Bure will become the fourth player to have his jersey retired by the team, joining Stan Smyl, Trevor Linden, and Markus Naslund.
