Country singer Paul Brandt pitches in with High River cleanup

CALGARY- High River residents are getting some help from a familiar face as the flood cleanup continues – country singer Paul Brandt has been helping residents for the past three weeks.

“It’s been fun to work alongside them and to just come out here and get ‘er done,” says Brandt.

Edgar and Evelyn Craig, longtime residents of High River, say they’re overwhelmed by the response from friends, family and strangers like Brandt, who on Tuesday was hard at work power washing the couple’s basement.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“It’s amazing,” says Edgar, who has served as pastor in the town for 33 years.  “You can’t describe it.”

“I lose it very once in a while when I experience the love of everyone who has come to help,” adds Evelyn.

The couple lost many of their belongings in the flooding – everything in their basement had to be thrown out, including family photos and antique china. They won’t know whether they’ll be able to live in their house again until later this week.

The flood damage, meanwhile, remains very visible in downtown High River, with debris and garbage still lining the streets.

One business is providing residents with a little bit of comfort- Evelyn’s Memory Lane Diner has become a popular local gathering place.

“Here they can laugh and the juke box comes on and they can have a pie and a meatloaf or whatever,” says owner Hubert Aumeier.

Aumeier says people want the things that remind them of the good times.
