In the face of the Lac-Megantic tragedy, another small town is taking notice – and action.
Hampstead, located on the island of Montreal, is launching a petition drive asking the federal government to prohibit the transport of hazardous material by train in Canada’s large cities.
Mayor William Steinberg notes that as terrible as the train derailment’s consequences have been on Lac-Megantic, they would have been even worse had the incident occurred in a metropolitan area like Montreal, Toronto, or Vancouver.
Steinberg notes that this request has been made by Hampstead residents for several years now. For other cities hoping to avoid a Megantic-type of disaster to rely on good fortune now would be irresponsible, he added.
