A pit bull puppy and an adult pit bull were allegedly tied to the back of a pick up truck, and dragged behind it for a short distance last Friday in Nanaimo.

A 27-year-old Nanaimo man has now been arrested.

Police say the puppy sustained significant injuries and required immediate hospitalization. He suffered significant bruising to his torso and had raw patches on his legs and shoulders from where he was dragged. He also had to be treated for shock.  Police say the mature dog was able to keep up and was not injured.

The accused man was not the owner of the dogs but they are owned by family members.

The incident occurred at about 3 p.m. on July 12th on Ivor Road in Cedar. Police say based on the examination of the animals and the information provided to them, they were able to arrest the man and take him into custody.

He was later released on a promise to appear and charges of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal under the Criminal Code of Canada have been recommended. One of his release conditions is to have no  contact with animals.

His first court appearance is set for September 3 in Nanaimo Provincial court .
