MONTREAL – Several dozen residents and supporters gathered at Oka National Park to to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the Oka crisis.
They were also there to raise awareness of plans to ship crude oil from Alberta through Quebec via traditional Kanehsatà:ke Kanien’kehà:ka territory.

“Development by companies like Enbridge, Gazoduc and GDB Construction violate the land rights of the Kanehsatà:ke Mohawks and threaten the health of the environment,” read a statement from protesters.
“This past year has witnessed various environmental catastrophes like pipeline bursts or explosions, most recently on the Athabasca River and Lac Mégantic, validating our concerns that extractive industries threaten the safety and well being of All our Relations.”
