New smoking regulations take effect in Saskatchewan

Starting October 1, it will be illegal to smoke in a vehicle with anyone under the age of 16 inside.

It is the next phase of the province’s plan to cut down on tobacco use. Penalties are expected to range from $150 to $500.

In addition, smokers will have to be at least three meters away from windows and entryways before they can light up. There will also be new rules about signs which promote tobacco products.

The final stage of the plan is expected to take effect next year. It will include rules that prohibit the sale of tobacco in pharmacies.
