Southern Alberta Summer Games kicks off in Taber

Athletes, spectators and volunteers from across Southern Alberta have gathered in Taber for the four day event.

Celebrating 44 years, the games are known as the largest annual sporting event in Western Canada.

That honour is validated by the massive crowds committed to the event every year.

Participants from two years old to 93 years old compete in 20 events at locations scattered throughout the MD of Taber.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

But the games are more than just winning a gold medal. Some families have been participating for generations, and meeting old competitors has become an annual tradition.

For Taber residents, hosting the summer games has also become something of a tradition.

This is the third year the town has hosted the event in the past 8 years, having previously seen athletes in 2005 and 2008.

Residents are proud to host the event, and officials have been hard at work since Raymond hosted the 2012 games.
