Collisions on the way down in Edmonton, but fatalities up: City report

Wes Rosa, Global News

EDMONTON- The City of Edmonton’s most recent traffic report shows the number of collision is going down in our city, but the number of deaths is on the rise.

In 2012, there were 23,237 collisions in our city, which is a slight decrease from 23,442 collisions in 2011.

However, the number of people killed in those collisions rose to 27 in 2012, from 22 in 2011, according to a report released Thursday.

“The injuries and deaths that came as a result of vehicle-related collisions in Edmonton have tremendous economic and social implications, and can be devastating to those individuals and their families,” said Yongsheng Chen, with the City of Edmonton’s Office of Traffic Safety.

“One life lost is still one too many, especially when the vast majority of these collisions are entirely preventable,” he added.

The city says following too closely and speed are significant factors in the number of collisions officials see each year.

“It is clear that we have a great deal more work to do in order to get people to take safety on our roads seriously,” Chen explained.

While the number of collisions in Edmonton has remained rather consistent over the past decade, the number of injury collisions has decreased from 7,638 in 2002 to 3,362 in 2012.
