Call for changes to LRT security

CALGARY- Calgary Transit is considering closing LRT Platforms when trains aren’t running, in an effort to prevent crimes from being committed late at night.

Transit’s review of LRT security comes just days after a 19-year-old woman was sexually assaulted at the Heritage LRT Station Sunday night. Two 15-year-old boys have been arrested and charged in connection with the attack.

High resolution cameras were recently installed at city LRT platforms and those clear pictures helped police track down the suspects and lay charges. In addition, transit say they will be installing a $5 million dollar closed circuit television system that would be programmed to spot any problems. Still, some riders say they’d feel more comfortable if they knew officers were on site.

However, police presence comes with a price tag and Transit says it would require a transition period of three or more years. In the meantime, transit will continue to review it’s safety measures in a effort to prevent incidents like Sunday’s sexual assault from happening again.
