TORONTO – There’s nothing like celebrating Canada’s birthday outside the country, right? According to recent data, many Canadians are making a run for the border this long weekend.
Booking data released by Travelocity.ca suggests many Canadians are using the holiday weekend to head to southern destinations, such as Las Vegas and New York City.
“Our travellers have enjoyed a drop in average daily rates of as high as 16 per cent in New York City hotels for the July 1st weekend vs. 2012,” said Brian Simpson of Travelocity.ca in a press release.
Earlier this week, travel site Hotwire.com said the majority of Canadians are staying north of the border.
The survey, based on volume of hotel bookings, showed Toronto is the most popular destination in North America to celebrate the July 1st weekend while Vancouver ranks second, followed by Ottawa and Montreal.
“While some travellers are hopping over the border to visit big U.S. cities, the majority of them are taking advantage of low prices domestically to celebrate Canadian patriotism,” said Pierre-Etienne Chartier, Vice President of the Hotwire Group, in a press release.
New York City rounded out the top five destinations to visit for the Canada Day weekend.
