FREDERICTON – New Brunswick’s education minister says the fact that students from New Brunswick were forbidden from attending a rally for Justin Trudeau has nothing to do with it being a Liberal event.

Jody Carr says the government’s policy is clear: teachers can’t bring students to partisan political events – regardless of which party is involved.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Carr confirms that he sent an email to his department’s deputy ministers reminding them of the policy before the Trudeau event in February.

But Carr insists it was a school superintendent who made the final decision to cancel the trip in Fredericton.

Trudeau was running for the Liberal leadership at the time.

Carr, a Conservative, says the government welcomes party leaders to visit schools and speak to students about politics – but partisan events are off limits.
