It’s a holiday tradition – an annual Christmas dinner for the less fortunate put on by B’s Diner in Old Strathcona.
But this year’s celebration is bittersweet.
In their seventh year of providing a Christmas meal and live entertainment for some of the city’s homeless, the diner’s owners’ are still dealing with a great loss. Their son, Jeremy, drowned in a tragic accident this summer.
Jeremy was caught in the undertow while swimming in the North Saskatchewan River this past July. Despite their loss, Bob and Brenda are continuing their annual meal, but dedicating this year’s feast to their son.
"I just feel that it’s something necessary for me to do. If I ever pass on, then I’ll know I’ve done good," said Brenda.
"A Dinner for Jeremy" goes from 11:30 am to 8 pm on Tuesday – two days after Jeremy would have turned 21 – at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.
