A 21-year-old man from Victoria, British Columbia is dead following a crash on a stretch of Alberta highway near Jasper.
An investigation has found that around 6:30 Monday morning, the driver crossed the centre line of Highway 16 east of Jasper, his truck colliding head-on with an eastbound truck pulling a trailer.
The 35-year-old Edmonton man who was driving that vehicle suffered minor injuries as a result of the collision. The name of the 21-year-old who was killed is not being released.
Traffic on Highway 16 was shut down as the crash was investigated, then later re-opened to one lane. By 4 p.m., both lanes were opened up to traffic.
Jasper RCMP are reminding drivers of the need to pay attention.
“Roadways are very dynamic environments with situations and circumstances that can change quickly,” writes Cst. David Fortney in a release. “By taking your eyes off of the road for even a moment, you increase the chance of a collision or accident. Operating a vehicle requires drivers to pay close attention to their surroundings.”
