EDMONTON- A cyclist had to be air lifted to hospital Saturday morning, after a medical emergency during the MS Bike Tour.

Nearly 2,000 cyclists took off from Leduc on a 185 kilometre ride to Camrose and back.

However, emergency crews, including STARS Air Ambulance, were called to an area south of Leduc shortly before 9:30 a.m., after a male cyclist suffered a heart attack, according to event organizers.

The incident happened within the first 15 kilometres of the tour.

Tour organizers say safety precautions are taken and this is the first time something like this has occurred during the tour.

“We have first-aiders on site and riding with the event. We have bike marshals and we also have community police radio network who are following cyclists on the route. As soon as an emergency happens, we dial 911 immediately. In this case we had the RCMP on site super quick,” explained Nick Dehod, manager of development with Bike Tours.
