TORONTO- A Uranium plant in Toronto’s west end will now be subject to soil testing by the provincial government, the Ontario Environment Ministry said Monday.
“I’ve ordered the testing be done at the present time, it will be done this summer, the protocols are being developed now,” Ontario Environment Minister Jim Bradley told Global News regarding GE-Hitachi Canada. “I think it’ll give people more of an assurance.”
Until now, the company has been in charge of its own testing. They would collect samples within a kilometre and send them out to a third party for testing. The results would then be published on their website.
“We’ve been incident-free in terms of having any incidents that affect the public. All of our results are within the natural levels of uranium in soil,” Paul Desiri, Environment, Health & Safety Manager for GE-Hitachi Canada, told Global News.
The plant has been up and running for 50 years.
