Police investigate if religious beliefs kept emaciated teen from getting help

CALGARY- Disturbing details have emerged about the suspicious death of a teenage boy in northwest Calgary.

The 15-year-old was found dead in a home in Citadel on Tuesday night, and was extremely emaciated.

Global News has learned that the teen suffered from a condition that is usually treatable, but the family’s religious beliefs may have prevented him from getting help.

The parents belong to an apostolic pentecostal group that uses the West Calgary Full Gospel Church in Bowness. The pastor says the family has gone to the church for about four years, but adds there is no teaching in the church that prevents members from seeking medical help.

Homicide detectives are now investigating and were back at the home on Thursday searching for evidence. Other children currently live in the home.
