SASKATOON – Saskatonians opened up their pantries and their hearts to fill up the Saskatoon Food Bank.

The annual city-wide food drive raised approximately 75,000 lbs of food this year, a 15,000 lbs increase over 2012.

“We were overwhelmed by the sheer volume of food flowing in to each location. Our teams were really scrambling to keep up! We are so thankful for the generous support of people across the city. And of course, none of this would be possible without our amazing volunteers and supporters,” says Laurie O’Connor, executive director of the food bank.

O’Connor says the high cost of rent and inadequate minimum wage contributes to food bank usage.

Organizers said this time of year is especially critical for donations, as holiday season donations begin to run low.

Donations are expected to continue trickling in over the next several days.
