A former Mountie already facing a series of charges over his conduct during the Surrey Six investigation is now accused of theft.

The new charge of theft under $5000 against Derek Brassington was sworn Wednesday and relates to an incident in Burnaby on March 30 of this year.

Special prosecutor Chris Considine approved the charge after reviewing the file.

Brassington will make a first appearance in Vancouver Provincial Court on May 7.

His other charges, including breach of trust and obstruction of justice, are due to go to trial next fall in BC Supreme Court.

He is alleged to have had an inappropriate relationship with a potential witness in the gangland murder case.

RCMP Chief Supt. Brian Cantera said Brassington has now voluntarily resigned from the RCMP.

“Mr. Brassington has also been the subject of statutory and internal Code of Conduct investigations,” he said.

“This morning Mr. Brassington’s discharge documents were received and signed by the Commanding Officer. Mr. Brassington voluntarily submitted these documents.”

“While we have been clear that the RCMP was seeking his involuntary dismissal, the opportunity to discharge him from the organization this morning was one which eliminated further delays, costs and uncertainty.

“Mr. Brassington’s career with the RCMP has ended. As a private citizen he will no longer be subject to any disciplinary actions under the RCMP Act and we will not be commenting further about his employment.”
