Dorval shooting: Mother says her son was framed

MONTREAL – The mother of a 12-year-old shooting suspect turned many heads at Montreal’s Youth Court Monday.  She told a judge her son was framed on January 21, 2013; claiming her son is not the person who shot her other son, a 16-year-old.

She told the court: “I know the truth.  It’s not my son who shot my other son.  It’s Kevin.  He threatened my son”.  Kevin, an 18-year-old West Island resident, was apparently inside the Dorval home and witnessed the shooting.  It’s believed he is the prosecution’s key witness in the case.

The mother’s explosive new claims were heard at the second day of teen’s bail hearing.  The 12-year-old, who can’t be named, is facing seven charges including one count of manslaughter.  He is also charged with using the same gun used in the shooting to hold up a gas station three weeks before the incident.

The court has been hearing arguments on whether the 12-year-old should remain detained or released pending the start of his trial.  Crown prosecutor Marie-Claude Bourassa is vigorously opposed to his release.  They have described him as a reckless young person with access to guns.

The bail hearing resumes next month on May 15th.  Defence attorney Isabel Schurman is expected to present her final witnesses including a psychologist.

If convicted, the suspect faces up to seven years in closed custody.
