Major sewer line project to tunnel underneath Saskatoon

SASKATOON – It’s the largest project of its kind to ever be done on Saskatoon’s east end.

The City of Saskatoon is working on installing sewer lines along McOrmond Drive, from Attridge Drive to Highway 5.

A drill named ‘Miss Connie’ will be lowered down a 50 foot shaft near Highway 5 in the coming days, opening up sewer service to Saskatoon’s east sector.

“This was always part of our long term plan, to open up development in this area. However the pace of the development in Willowgrove didn’t allow us to build this trunk sewer in advance,” said Dan Williams, with the city’s infrastructure services department.

“Normally we do it by open cut methods.”

Drilling 50 feet below the surface will limit disruptions for residents and traffic on McOrmond Drive.

Two sewer mains, stretching one-and-a-half kilometres will start at Highway 5 and off Attridge Drive.

“We got another 10 days of prep work and launch rail and boxing out of the frame window to make it safe for the people inside the shaft and anywhere from 10 days to two weeks we’ll be putting her together and starting the launch process,” said Troy Graham, general superintendent of Michels Canada.

Two different bits will be used for drilling. Miss Connie will dig the 8 foot sanitary tunnel first, while a 10 foot bit will be brought in to do a storm sewer.

Willems says this project is a major undertaking for the city, expecting to cost $32 million.

The McOrmond Drive trunk sewer project is expected to be completed by the end of July 2014.
