The 60-year-old Catatumbo was born Jorge Torres Victoria. He is leader of the FARC’s western front.

Some analysts have looked favourably on Catatumbo joining the negotiations, saying it is important for the FARC’s military wing to be represented.

He is said to be a key lieutenant of commander Alfonso Cano.

FARC and Colombian government representatives have been in negotiations in Cuba since the fall.
