Flood prevention to the next level

SASKATOON – Sump pumps are flying off shelves in Saskatchewan while sand bags are on standby.

People in Saskatoon and surrounding areas are doing whatever it takes to prevent flooding this spring.

Marie Lannoo has had flooding issues before and isn’t taking any chances this year so she called up a local excavating company to remove her snow.

“It’s very difficult to find people now to hire to come and help you because everyone is booked and so we were just really lucky to find this company that happened to be available and yes we’re paying to have this done but we couldn’t have done this on our own,” said Lannoo.

Like others in the snow clearing industry, the phone at G&S Landscape & Excavation Services has been ringing off the hook and isn’t expected to stop anytime soon.

Foreman Karl Degenstein says they are usually working on green yards this time of year instead of clearing snow.

“I may have done a handful in the six years I’ve been with the company and that could be a stretch even saying that. We’ve had plenty this year,” said Degenstein

While it may cost a pretty penny to get the snow removed from residential yards, Marie Lannoo says it’s a small price to pay for not having to worry about flooding.

“A huge relief and to see it taken away it just gives you piece of mind for sure that we are minimizing the risk of flooding back here,” said Lannoo.
