Calgary psychiatrist convicted of sex assault granted bail

CALGARY – A Calgary psychiatrist convicted of sexually assaulting three patients has been granted bail, pending his appeal.

Aubrey Levin was sentenced to five years in prison in January, after being found guilty of molesting three male patients who were court-ordered to see him.

He initially faced charges involving nine different men, but was acquitted on two charges, and had a mistrial ordered for four others.

Levin’s lawyers filed an appeal shortly after his sentencing, arguing the trial judge failed to order the Crown to release relevant information to their case. They also allege that the judge pressured jury members to reach a verdict when they were deadlocked.

On Wednesday, a Calgary Judge granted Levin bail until his appeal can be heard, effective immediately. He will be under house arrest from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. and cannot leave the province without permission.

The justice has imposed deadlines to ensure Levin’s appeal process moves as quickly as possible. The tentative date for his appeal to be heard is October 11th.
