SAINT JOHN, N.B. – Former New Brunswick premier Frank McKenna spoke in favour of developing the shale gas industry during an address Monday to a business audience.
The former Liberal leader said the province is in the right place at the right time for energy development.
He told about 550 people at a Board of Trade luncheon in Saint John that environmental regulation should be respected, but it shouldn’t block an industry that could prove to be a key to helping his home province rebound economically.
McKenna, who is deputy chairman of TD Bank Group, says that the prospect of a West-to-East pipeline coming to the province also holds great potential for the province’s revenues, as does the Canaport liquefied natural gas terminal near Saint John.
People opposed to establishing a shale gas industry handed out flyers at the various entrances to the mall and hotel where McKenna spoke.
