RCMP officers have identified the victim of Wednesday’s fatal crash on Highway 881 as Ronald Foster of Gibbons, Alberta.
The 54 year-old was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which Lac La Biche RCMP say happened around 2:45pm on an icy patch about 20 kilometres south of Conklin, 365 km northeast of Edmonton.
His passenger, a man in his 20s, was taken to the Lac La Biche hospital by ground ambulance but was later airlifted to hospital in Edmonton.
The other driver, a 39 year old man, was transported by air ambulance to Edmonton. Both men are in critical but stable condition.
RCMP are still investigating the cause of the collision.
Road conditions at the time were moderate to poor.
On Thursday morning, there were two other crashes that shut down a stretch of the highway. RCMP said some areas of the road were still covered in black ice so travellers are advised to exercise caution.
