EXCLUSIVE: Sexual assault victim speaks out following Levin sentencing

CALGARY- One of the men responsible for putting a former forensic psychiatrist behind bars is publicly sharing his story for the first time since a guilty verdict in the case.

On Thursday, Dr. Aubrey Levin was sentenced to five years in prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting three of his male patients. He was acquitted on two other charges, and the jury could not reach a verdict on four others.

With Levin now behind bars, his first victim, who cannot be named, is finally free to talk about the notorious case.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“It gives me some closure, and finally I can start to move on. To be believed means so much,” he tells Global News.

He met Levin at the Bowden Institution in 1999 after being convicted of impaired driving, and has been in and out of jail for years. He says he wonders if his life could have turned out different, had he gotten proper psychiatric help instead of being assaulted by his doctor.

“I remember the first time…he did it to me almost every single time,” he remembers. “Guaranteed, I would have had a better life. Look what this guy did. These are memories I will never forget.”

He was the first victim to come forward, and recorded several assaults with a spy camera he smuggled in to an appointment, afraid no one would believe his story without proof.

However, his relief at the end of the controversy-filled trial has been short-lived. Levin filed an appeal moments after a judge handed down the sentence. In less than two weeks, Levin is expected to apply for bail.

“Now we’re gonna be forced to go through it all over again if they grant him an appeal,” his victim says. “It’s never ending.”

“I only pray he has to stay in jail ‘cause then he has to pay for what he’s done.”
