The Vancouver Canucks started their season on a winning note with a 3-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers at home.
Bo Horvat potted two goals, including the game winner, while Jacob Markstrom made 33 saves in the victory.
Horvat, fresh off a six-year extension with the club, scored his first off a powerful drive to the net, lifting the puck up and past Oilers’ netminder Cam Talbot.
Brandon Sutter also tallied for Vancouver in the first period after a turnover led to a fortunate bounce in front of the net for the veteran.
Horvat’s second marker came early in the second period off a wraparound attempt which snuck past Talbot, chasing him out of the net.
Kris Russell and Burnaby’s Ryan Nugent-Hopkins replied for Edmonton.
Vancouver next plays the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday at Rogers Arena; the Sens may be without captain Erik Karlsson, who continues to recover from ankle surgery during the offseason.
