A location manager for Narcos was reportedly shot and killed in Mexico while scouting locations for the show.

Netflix confirmed the death of location manager Carlos Munoz Portal on Monday. “We are aware of the passing of Carlos Munoz Portal, a well-respected location scout, and send our condolences to his family,” the streaming service said in a statement published by Deadline. “The facts surrounding his death are still unknown as authorities continue to investigate.”

The company did not confirm the cause of death, but The Hollywood Reporter reports — per El Pais — Munoz was killed by apparent gunshot. Munoz’s body was found in his car on an unnamed dirt road in San Bartolo Actopan. The rural area of Mexico is known for gang-related drug violence.

The location manager had been working in the film industry for more than a decade and his resume includes Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto and 2015’s James Bond flick Spectre.

Season four of Narcos moved from Colombia to Mexico. Drug-related violence in the country has forced entertainment productions to relocate or cancel shoots in the past.
