RCMP are asking for the public’s help to identify a person of interest in what they describe as a shortchanging scam.

On Thursday, a man entered a coffee shop in Hantsport, N.S. around 4 p.m. and asked for change for a $50 bill.

Police say during the exchange, the man confused the clerk and ended up leaving the restaurant with a coffee, his original $50 bill and two $20 bills.

Police believe the suspect in the coffee shop incident is the same individual who was involved in a similar incident on Sept. 5 in Barrington Passage, N.S.

In that case, a man entered a restaurant on Highway 330 around 5:30 p.m. and purchased an item with a large bill. Police say the suspect became agitated and caused the clerk to become confused, which resulted in him being given back too much change.

The suspect is described as a white male with blonde hair and scruff on his face. In the Barrington Passage incident, he was wearing a black ball cap, black shorts, dark sneakers and camouflage T-shirt.

RCMP are reminding employees who handle cash to be mindful and vigilant of this scam – particularly when individuals use larger bills or ask for change.

Anyone with information about either of these incidents in asked to contact RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
