The city of London is reminding pool owners to make sure they de-chlorinate their water before draining pools for the winter.
Many are likely buying their closing kits and getting their pool covers ready, but officials say it’s also important to make sure dangerous chemicals don’t wind up in the sewer system.
“We need to be aware that some of those chemicals can be harmful to the aquatic life and plant life that’s out in our creeks and rivers and so the most important thing to do is to follow some simple steps in eliminating high chemical levels,” city employee Barry Orr told AM980.
Orr says to do that, you can stop putting chemicals into your pool one to two weeks before draining or put in a stabilizer that will de-chlorinate the water.
“So you just add a little bit of liquid or add a tablet that will stabilize the chlorine and then we want to make sure that we test that so that it’s below one part per million before you drain it to a roadway.”
The reminder comes with the first day of fall is just a couple of weeks away.
