Poplar River First Nation wildfire under control: Manitoba

As wildfires across the province continue to burn thanks to hot, dry weather, fire officials had at least one piece of good news on Sunday.

The wildfire that has been burning near Poplar River First Nation since last month is now classified as being held, according to the Manitoba government.

A release that went out on Sunday said that firefighters and equipment continue to monitor the fire and work on hot spots, but the fire is currently under control.

The “held” status comes as good news for temporary shelters run by the Canadian Red Cross.

As of Saturday, more than 5,000 evacuees were in Winnipeg, Brandon and Thomson to escape wildfires burning throughout northern parts of Manitoba. The updated situation in Poplar River could mean more than 800 residents could return home in the days ahead.

The government said Sunday, however, that there are no improvements in the fight against a blaze near Wasagamack, where the majority of evacuees are from.

That wildfire still occupies 28,000 hectares and is just one kilometre away from structures in the town.
