High load hits overpass, temporarily closes Highway 14 westbound

A high load hits the overpass on Highway 14 at Highway 21. Eric Beck, Global News

A truck with a high load hit an overpass on Highway 14 at Highway 21, causing minor damage to the bridge and closing westbound traffic for a short time Friday.

It happened at around 12 p.m. southeast of Edmonton.

RCMP said the truck had a permit but there may have been an issue with the load measurement. Commercial Vehicle Enforcement is investigating.

Crews had to close the highway temporarily while they cleaned up the damage.

Just before 2 p.m., the left lane of the highway was re-opened. Eastbound traffic was not affected.

Crews were working Friday afternoon to make sure it was safe to travel under the bridge.

Alberta Transportation and Alberta Infrastructure were both on scene to inspect the bridge and determined it was structurally sound and travel in the area was safe.
