File / Global News

The province’s civilian police watchdog is investigating the death of a man days after he was arrested by police using force.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) was informed by Winnipeg police Wednesday and took over the investigation.

According to an IIU release, officers used force during the arrest and processing on Aug. 9. A police news release said the arrest followed a foot pursuit where “use of force was utilized”.

After the arrest and during processing, the man complained of sore ribs and was transported to hospital. He was “medically cleared” and detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.

On Aug. 11 the man was brought to hospital from the remand centre and on Aug. 13 police were told the man had died.

The IIU is a civilian organization that investigates serious incidents involving police, on or off duty.
