IIU investigates complaint against RCMP about off duty officers drinking and driving

Global News / File

The province’s police watchdog has been called in to investigate claims of police officers driving impaired while off duty.

RCMP received a complaint to its East District office about a party at an off-duty officers’ home that several RCMP members were at on June 29.

A release from the Independent Investigations Unit said it was called in by the RCMP because of an allegation “that sometime during the night, two off-duty members who had consumed alcohol took their personal vehicles for a drive.”

The RCMP’s East District had launched its own investigation into the incident.

The IIU took on this case because “it is in the public interest for the agency to investigate this incident,” the release said.
