Lethbridge residents are being reminded there is a high fire risk in the community.

At around 9 p.m. on Thursday, firefighters responded to a blaze at an apartment building in the 300 block of Highlands Boulevard West.

The fire was contained to the deck of a fourth floor unit. The damage is estimated at $1,000. The building houses approximately 80 people.

“The fire had the potential to be extremely dangerous. Hot dry weather conditions, combined with the fact that fires starting outside of the building do not trigger the alarm systems, cause extreme risk for property damage and public safety,” said a joint release from the City of Lethbridge and Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services.

On July 11, firefighters responded to a blaze at The Gardens at West Highlands on the 2600 block of Garry Drive West. The fire caused approximately $2.5 million in damage.

On Thursday, officials issued a city-wide fire ban due to the dry and hot weather.

Residents are reminded to fully extinguish cigarettes and ensure they are disposed of in a non-combustible container filled with sand or water.
