People hoping to go swimming at Lake Echo Beach this weekend may have to put the fun on hold as it has been closed to swimmers due to high bacteria levels in the water.
The beach receives water quality testing weekly, along with other supervised beaches throughout the municipality. Recent results indicated the level of bacteria exceeded the recreational use guidelines given by Health Canada, prompting the Halifax Regional Municipality to close the beach until further notice.

The city said Friday that higher bacteria levels can be caused by several factors including weather or waterfowl.
Testing will continue to be done by staff and the municipality will inform residents when the beach reopens.
Earlier this week Birch Cove Beach was closed for high bacteria levels but has since reopened.
