UPDATE: FortisBC says the number of customers without power was more than 3,000 in Kelowna’s Upper Mission area after at least two trees fell, one on a power line, the other on a house. Fortis says damage to the line is extensive. Power was restored at 7 p.m. A small grass fire that ignited was quickly extinguished.
3:15 p.m. – Emergency personnel are responding to trees down on a power line and a house in a Kelowna neighborhood as well as a possible grass fire.
Shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday, crews were called to the area of Chute Lake Crescent and Stanley Crescent in the city’s Upper Mission area responding to reports of at least two trees down.
One tree has reportedly fallen on a house, the other on a major power line.
There are also reports of a grass fire that may have ignited as a result.
FortisBC is reporting a power outage affecting 1,600 customers. It hopes to have power restored by 6 p.m.
It appears winds caused the trees to come down. Wind gusts of 50 km/hr were reported at the Kelowna Airport Tuesday afternoon.
