If you are one of the disappointed campers who tried to book a campsite this summer but couldn’t, CKNW has a breakdown of how many campsites are available to reserve online.
Some parks alot all available sites for online reservations while others don’t.
Out of the 10,482 sites, 51 per cent are reservable while 49 per cent are first-come-first-served.
Those with more than 80 per cent reservable sites are shown below in green, parks with 40 to 79 per cent of reservable sites are in yellow, and those with less than 39 per cent in red.
The Ministry of Environment was under fire earlier this year as people called their reservation system “unfair” and complained about the lack of sites available for B.C. residents.
The number of camping reservations in the province has been steadily on the rise, but so have the number of reservations made from outside the province.
Data obtained by CKNW shows one in every four reservations is made from outside B.C., the U.S., or overseas.
And although the number of campsites in the past two years has remained the same, demand has increased by almost 40 per cent.
In 2014/2015, B.C. Parks’ website had an average of more than 10,000 unique visits each day. That’s a six per cent increase from the previous year.
The Ministry of Environment announced changes to the online reservations system earlier this month, in an effort to make the system fairer.
Some of the changes include eliminating ‘opening day’ to allow campers to book four months in advance, as well as a seven-day limit on how long campers can stay.
