York Regional Police arrested 20 people for impaired driving over the past week and charged 92 others with distracted driving.

Between May 29 and June 5, police said 13 people were charged after being found impaired by alcohol while seven others were charged after being found impaired by drugs.

Eight of the arrests happened after citizens called police, five were charged after drivers were involved in a collision and the seven others were charged through RIDE checks or officers on patrol.

In one of the incidents, on May 29, police received a call about a black Toyota Corolla travelling eastbound on Crosby Avenue in Richmond Hill.

The caller allegedly told police they observed the vehicle swerving and hitting a curb and police later located the car at the intersection of Major Mackenzie Drive East and Newkirk Road after it collided with another vehicle.

When officers approached the car, they said they could smell an odour of marijuana and the female driver underwent numerous drug impairment tests.

She was later charged with impaired driving by drug.

Ninety-two other drivers faced a $490 fine and three demerit points after police charged them with distracted driving.

Many of the drivers charged with distracted driving were caught through the use of York Regional Police’s “We’re on Board, Are You?” campaign in which police officers ride on city buses and spot distracted drivers.
