Aislin retrospective

Terry Mosher, also known as Aislin, has been delivering satire to Montrealers through his drawings for half a century. Now, the McCord Museum is celebrating his career with a new exhibit.

To mark Aislin’s 50 years of cartoons for the Montreal Gazette, 50 of his best illustrations will be on display.

Aislin has used his pen to take aim at some of politics’ biggest names while addressing issues in our society.

And his cartoons have often stirred the pot.

Mosher dropped by Focus Montreal studios to discuss his illustrious career.

Concordia students shine light on NCC history

This year marks the 90th anniversary of the establishment of Montreal’s Negro Community Centre (NCC) which served as the heart and soul of Montreal’s Black community.

The building was built in 1890 as the West End Methodist Church and by 1926 it was reborn as the Negro Community Centre.

In its heyday, jazz greats Oscar Peterson and Oliver Jones got their starts there.

The centre offered music lessons, night courses and daycare services to community members in need.

Left in a state of disrepair, the centre filed for bankruptcy and was ultimately demolished in 2014.

A group of Concordia students spent the semester digging through NCC archives to shine the spotlight on Montreal’s Black history, the results of which will be presented in a showcase April 11.

Students Summit Oliviere and Teejay Bhalla join senior anchor Jamie Orchard to discuss their findings.
