A school bus driver in South Carolina is being praised after her quick thinking may have saved the lives of several children.

Marilyn Masters was driving her usual route in Greenville County, S. C., Wednesday morning. She was stopped on Highway 418, with the bus’s stop sign extended and lights flashing, when she noticed a car approaching from behind at great speed.

Security cameras on the bus captured what happened next, as Masters waved off a group of children who were about to cross the road – and then moments later, a silver sedan blows right past the bus at high speed, sliding off the road and onto the shoulder before continuing down the highway.

“I don’t even want to think about [what could have happened],” Masters told WYFF News 4. “It would not have ended well at all.”

She says her 29 years of bus driving experience proved invaluable in predicting that the oncoming car wouldn’t stop.

“That’s why we check, and we re-check, and we re-check, because everything happens so quickly,” Masters said.

The Greenville County School Board posted the video to their Facebook page, urging drivers to respect the law and stop for school busses when their stop signs and lights are deployed.

“Sadly, what you are about to watch is not uncommon,” the board said in a statement. “Greenville County drivers regularly disregard school bus stop arms.”

The school board also thanked Masters for her quick thinking.

“We are thankful for the watchful eye of our bus driver who held her hand up and kept children from crossing the road. She is a hero.”
