Ward 10 Coun. Andre Chabot believes comments Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi made this week about the proposed CalgaryNEXT project are a breach of process.

On Monday evening, Nenshi told reporters that CalgaryNEXT, a proposed hybrid arena-stadium-field house potentially planned for construction in the West Village, is “dead.”

In a blog post on his campaign website, Cabot, who is challenging Nenshi in the upcoming mayoral election, said Nenshi “violated disclosure terms of an in-camera meeting.”

“Suddenly, without advising city council, or anyone else who was party to the discussion, the current mayor decided to announce CalgaryNEXT is dead,” his blog stated. “Who’s to say its proponents won’t come back with a version that’s more palatable to City Council? Certainly not the current mayor.”

Speaking with News Talk 770, Chabot said he wouldn’t be able to confirm whether the project is actually “dead” without disclosing in-camera discussions.

“When we discuss things in-camera one of our obligations is to keep those discussions confidential,” he said.

“In my opinion, that statement that [Nenshi] made was a violation of our confidentiality agreements,” Chabot said. “I can’t arbitrarily make that decision that it was a breach [of process], but in my opinion it was.”

In a tweet earlier in the week, Chabot called the comments “another [example] of the mayor’s arrogance.”

On Twitter, Nenshi responded to Chabot’s allegations of violating council in-camera rules, saying he has been making comments about CalgaryNEXT publicly for months.

When asked if he was in favour of the CalgaryNEXT project, Chabot told News Talk 770 he thought it was a facility that “any city in the world would like to have.”
