The NFL in many ways is still the No Fun League.
Commissioner Roger Goodell wants to meet with a group of players to discuss the NFL’s anti-celebration rules before the league decides to relax its grip on what can and can’t occur on the field after a big play.
Goodell says he wants the players to be able to express themselves and celebrate, but he doesn’t want to see taunting and “acts that we think reflect poorly on all of us.”
Goodell says he’s confident a new policy will be ready in time for the start of the 2017 season.
Players were flagged 30 times for celebration penalties last year, up from 20 infractions in 2016.
The numbers are going up, but it’s not like the NFL has a crippling problem with over-the-top celebrations.
We’re talking about 30 penalties among the 40,000 plays that were run last season.
Still, the competition committee has created a training video to help players understand the difference between which celebrations are okay and which ones will be flagged.
The game is the game.
We’re going to cheer when something amazing happens on the field.
And we’re going to get mad when our team doesn’t play well.
But when it comes to celebrating, I agree that there should be a line.
Unless you’re tainting or embarrassing someone, I think everything is fair game.
