The RCMP detonated a possible bomb at a Vernon park early Tuesday morning.
Vernon RCMP Sgt. Colby Attlesey describes the suspicious looking device to Global News as a fire extinguisher with what appears to be a pipe bomb attached to the end of it.
Attlesey says police got the call about the item Monday at around 9 p.m. from a concerned resident who discovered it sitting on top of a concrete barrier in the parking lot at Marshall Field Park in the 6000 block of Okanagan Landing Road.
The area was quickly cordoned off and the RCMP’s explosives unit was called in from the Lower Mainland.
Police destroyed the device around 4 a.m. Tuesday. Residents in the area would have heard two loud bangs as the item was being blown up.
It’s still not known whether the device was an actual explosive or just made to look like one.
RCMP are asking anyone with information on who may have left the suspicious looking item in the park or may have witnessed any odd activity there to call them.
