The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation poured $4.5 million in slot machine revenue last year into infrastructure upgrades in London.
A chunk of up to $1 million went into the reconstruction of the Windermere Bridge, which links together east and west Londoners as well as provides a route for EMS travelling to the LHSC University Hospital.
“OLG’s contribution provided the funding to extend the life of the Winderemere Bridge…and improve mobility and quality of life for all area residents,” said city engineer Kelly Scherr in a news release Thursday.
The reconstruction project, which will extend the life of the bridge by up to 25 years, also saw wider roads to accommodate for cyclists traveling in both directions and as well as sidewalks for pedestrians.
London’s Emerald Ash Borer tree removal and replacement program will also receive funding as well as upgrades to multi-use park pathways and enhancements to neighbourhood parks.
“These contributions from the OLG have a tremendous impact on city building and important community projects,” said Mayor Matt Brown in a news release Thursday. “Through this partnership we are able to grow our communities and neighbourhoods.”
Annually, the OLG contributes 100 per cent of proceeds into Ontario, from health care to education and community programming.
