A special weather statement was issued Monday for London and Middlesex, with Environment Canada calling for heavy rain overnight Tuesday.

The advisory, which also covers Brant, Elgin, Lambton, and Oxford counties, is linked to a large storm system forming in the southwest U.S., said Geoff Coulson, a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada.

“We’re going to see a little shower activity during the day on Tuesday from this system, but then that shower activity is expected to intensify Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. That’s when the biggest rainfall amounts are expected and, in fact, we could actually see some thunderstorm activity,” Coulson said.

According to the national weather agency, around 15 to 25 millimetres of rain is possible Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Some showers are expected throughout the day on Wednesday, albeit in lesser amounts, Coulson said.

“This type of rainfall event is not something that we see all that often, necessarily, at this time of year, but it does happen from time to time,” Coulson said, adding that a rainfall warning could be prompted if the region receives more than 25 millimetres of rain.

In addition to the showers, Londoners will see a high of 10 C on Tuesday and a high of 11 C on Wednesday.

Things will drop back to colder than normal conditions later in the week, with a high of -2 C on Thursday and a high of zero on Friday, Coulson said. Milder than normal conditions will return over the weekend, with cloudy conditions and highs of 4 C and 7 C on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

The normal high for this time of the year is 1 C, according to Environment Canada.
