EDMONTON – An investigation is underway after three rail workers were hit by a CN freight train in Edmonton.
The men were taken to hospital and two of them are said to be in critical condition.
They were clearing snow and ice from rail switches along the tracks yesterday morning.
Police say the men were using snowblowers and wearing hearing protection, and didn’t hear the train, which sounded its horn and hit the brakes as it slid towards them on the icy tracks.
Police said the east-bound train was going about 40 kilometres an hour.
The men are employed by A and B Rail Services Limited and were working under contract to CN.
The collision is being investigated by C-N, Alberta’s Occupational Healthy and Safety Department and federal safety regulators.
