Lethbridge “Chem Guys” prove science is a blast!

LETHBRIDGE- A group of local high school students being treated to quite a unique science lesson Thursday.

University of Lethbridge professors John Eng and Wayne Lippa, better knows as he “Chem Guys,” took their science show to Lethbridge Collegiate Institute to teach students chemistry is anything but boring.

Lippa tells Global News they travel to school across southern Alberta with one goal in mind.

“To show everyone chemistry can be fun. You can do all kinds of interesting things with chemistry, and we really try and excite and engage students of all ages,” he adds.

The idea is to get students involved so they may one day pursue chemistry at a post secondary level.

LCI science instructor Jessica St. Goddard, says getting students engaged in the sciences can be a challenge.

“It’s always hard to get past the textbook and inside classroom learning. We always like to have demonstrations and stuff because when they see what goes on in the real world, real life, it’s awesome for them,” she says.

In a number of experiments, demonstrations, and competitions the comedic pair teach student how chemistry is very much a part of everyday life.

“It’s a good thing to kind of understand chemistry because people kind of get scared when they think of chemicals, but really they are all around us,” Lippa says.

When the experiments are over, the Chem Guys say they can only hope for one thing.

“It’s a good way to go off to Christmas Break and hopefully come back all jazzed up for science class,” he says.

Students also collected non-perishable food items for the Lethbridge Foodbank as a part of the Chem Guys visit to LCI.
