WATCH ABOVE: He’s the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player, and he’s fully committed to bringing a championship to Calgary, but that’s not the only legacy Bo Levi Mitchell wants to leave behind. As Brendan Parker reports, he and his wife are also committed to making an impact with ‘Mitchell’s Miracle Day’ – Dec 16, 2016

It didn’t take long for Bo Levi Mitchell and his wife Madison to realize how much potential Mitchell’s Miracle Day has in Calgary.

Last year, in less than a week, Bo Levi and Madison collected donations all over the city from generous Calgarians to help give two kids and their families a Christmas they’ll never forget.

The kids were chosen through Big Brothers and Big Sisters. They spent the day with Bo Levi and his then-fiancée at Chinook Mall shopping for gifts for their family members and bowling before getting surprised with gifts.

“The shopping was so fun because you know you’re doing the right thing but man, it’s so fun to just spend time with the kids and I think that’s going to be the fun part,” Bo Levi said.

“It was great to see their reactions,” Madison said. “I started crying so it was hard to talk to anybody after. I cry all the time. It’ll be worse this year.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

This year, Mitchell’s Miracle Day will be even bigger. Thanks to an even greater response from Calgarians, they’ve added another family.

“The amount of emails is amazing right now and I think it just speaks to the true character of who Calgary really is,” Bo Levi said.

And the two kids from the first year are coming back – this time to help give back.

“It was actually the little girl’s idea, that she wanted to come back,” Madison said. “When we were done shopping for her and her family, her mom came up and was like, ‘I really want to come back and help next year in anyway we can.’ So I think that’s been the best thing – to see how it’s already come full circle in just one year.”

This year will also be a little different because Bo Levi and Madison are expecting their first child in the New Year: a baby girl.

“I think the cool part is understanding that we’re becoming parents and seeing the reaction it has on the parents to me is something that’s so huge,” he said.

“To watch them break down in tears, or another grown man, when you go to shake his hand, push your hand away and gives you a huge hug.”

“Bo and I were also very lucky that we had parents that taught us the importance of giving back,” Madison added. “I think now that we’re having a kid of our own, we’re just kind of trying to make it even better so that we’re setting that example too.”

Miracle Day is on Saturday. Bo Levi and Madison will spend the day at Chinook Mall with the three families chosen. It will include shopping, lunch and bowling, before the kids are surprised with their Christmas gifts.
