Know Your Zone still causing confusion for Winnipeggers – Dec 12, 2016

A slope of icy snow separates Melissa Ben from her parking spot in Elmwood.

She moved her car this weekend as part of the residential parking ban, but when she moved out, someone else moved in.

“It’s frustrating because we did our best to move our vehicles so that the cleaners have an easier time, and then when other people leave their vehicles there and they don’t even live on my street it’s like ‘No, why should you have a clean spot and I don’t because I’ve done what I was supposed to do?’” said Ben.

The spot wasn’t cleared, and the snow still sits in her space. She said cars were parked all the way down her street, and no one was towed.

Drivers in Winnipeg had to check the “Know your Zone” app this weekend to see when their vehicles had to be off the street.

A total of 779 tickets were issued to cars illegally parked, and 2,630 vehicles were courtesy towed.

In Elmwood, some streets have more than a foot of snow sitting in the middle of the road.

Rusky Collantes said he has to walk an extra few blocks because his normal spots are snowed in.

He said vehicles aren’t moving, and the app isn’t working.

“Maybe next time they can have a Know Your Zone sign so it’s easier for people to know, instead of just every day you need to check the internet or news for where you can park,” said Collantes.

The city said they don’t plan on making any changes to the app, and feel it’s been working well.

“We’ve been seen some positive results of people moving their cars, and getting the plow done as quickly as we can,” said Public Works communications officer Ken Allen.

Due to resources, Allen said crews won’t be able to go back out and clean streets that were missed over the weekend.

“The idea is to get the streets plowed the first pass, and if there’s cars in the way, it really does hinder the plowing operation.”

Drivers in Elmwood said parking bans need to be clearer, because not everyone is checking the app, and ruining roads for winter.

“It just comes down to lack of respect for your neighbour, it’s sad to say,” said Ben
